McAlester & Tahlequah
Archeological Societies
The McAlester Archeological Society is a chapter of the Oklahoma Anthropological Society, which was started by the late Dr. Robert Bell of The Oklahoma Archaeological Survey located at the University of Oklahoma and is designated as the sole agency which may issue permits to explore, excavate, etc., from state, municipal, or county lands any archaeological site or antiquity.
The McAlester Archeological Society was an active chapter of the O.A.S. a few years ago but for some reason had ceased to operate. It was re-opened on December 19th of 2005 and reinstated on January 28th of 2006, with a membership of 10 members at that time. We are a non-profit organization with a membership of around 30 members at the present time. We do hope to increase the membership. Dues for membership are $10 per person or $15 for a family, per year. The chapter year is from January 1st thru December 31st. Those joining in November or December will be considered paid up until the following December 31st. We meet at 7pm on the 2nd Thursday of each month at Krebs City Hall, located on Highway 31 in Krebs, Oklahoma.
The Tahlequah Archaeological Society is also a chapter of OAS. It was originally called Cookson Hills Archaeological Society. Thomas Purdin was the President when it became inactive during the 80’s. The late, Charlotte Gifford, OAS historian asked Thomas to get the chapter going again, which he promised to do. Ms Gifford lost her battle with cancer in the summer of 2006, before we could reorganize the chapter. . Thomas kept his promise to her and we were officially re-activated in February, 2007. Our meetings for this chapter are on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Tahlequah Library from 7 pm until 9 pm. We also have different speakers and programs each month, and admission is free for these meetings. Everyone is welcome to attend. The by-laws, goals and membership dues are the same as those for MAS.
Both chapters work together to find, study, document, and record historical and prehistorical sites in the state. Each year we co-host an archaeological day, with crafts and activities that are replicas of the past. This event is for the enjoyment of anyone wanting to attend, and admission is free. Both the McAlester and Tahlequah Archeology Societies have a different speaker or demonstration of historical or archeological interest each month. These range from archeology dig sites, to historical books or events, to demonstrations of weapons, and the making and use of tools made from stone.
We sincerely hope you enjoy this web site and the information and pictures of some of the people and the work done on some of the archaeological excavations we have been privileged to participate in around the state.
Everyone is invited to attend any or all of our monthly meetings and to join either or both chapters.
If you’re interested in helping to preserve the history of our great state, attend some of the meetings and see and hear what is being done to attain this goal.
